A 52 Week Autobiography Through Music – Week 14 – Pink Floyd
I went through a pretty massive, obsessive Pink Floyd phase in my teens along with a few friends. In my memory this was concurrent with the Led Zeppelin and Yes phases but of course there was a lot of other music we were listening to at the same time. In my memory Floyd, Zep and Yes stand out as the music we listened to the most for a few years.
I am in the US, traveling with the family as I type this and as such I am a little short on time so I will let the video do the talking. Speaking of the video this week I broke my 3 minute rule in order to do a little something different and feature a conversation with my aunt Patricia who was a major influence on me musically when I was growing up. She helped turn me on to a LOT of different music and for that I am eternally grateful.
I will say that the little bit of listening to Pink Floyd I did this last week as I prepared this post really reminded me of why this band appealed to me. They carved out an identity that is unmistakable and created some of the most amazing, thought provoking and engaging music in Rock and Roll.

Yes. David Gilmour is a guitarist that stands out. My first exposure was early Floyd, also. Then I saw the Dark Side tour in Wichita and The Wall in L.A. when it was first performed. You are right about the idea of every note he plays meaning something. Our hero Phil Manzanera plays with David Gilmour a bit these days and their styles reflect and compliment each other.
Dave Gilmore and Phil Manzanera? Wow I didn’t know. You are always able to clue me in to new stuff.
Good on you Patricia!
