A 52 Week Autobiography Through Music – Week 17 – Black Flag
A 52 Week Autobiography Through Music Week 17 – Black Flag from Pancycle on Vimeo.
This week’s video is a bit longer than usual. I seem to have had a lot to say about my Punk days even though they didn’t really begin until a few years after I first heard Black Flag. They made me aware of the music but as I say in the video it was not until I turned 16 or so that I really started buying other Punk albums and going to shows and eventually playing the music.
I thought it would be cool to film outside but in retrospect maybe it wasn’t the best plan. It was a bit noisy and clouds kept coming and going so the video is a bit crazy as well. In the end I hope the point gets across that Black Flag was a very influential first introduction to Punk music and the attitudes and lifestyles that were pretty inextricably tied to it.

i do recall going to hear godburger play! and i am entirely in favour of the juxtaposition of punk rock and serene songbird-filled gardens. i’ll also put in a plug for henry rollins’s online journalism and activism – he is a compelling writer and speaker.
And that gig was the worst ever! I distinctly remember my wrists cramping up the very first song and I was executing about 15% of what I needed to be playing. It was horrific. I was doing everything I could just to hold on. It felt like just clubbing at the drums with big, fleshy logs…
Well, poor you, but the venue was not very music-friendly anyway – too many people not there to listen to music! So your troubles would not have been noticeable beyond the stage. Perhaps that was intrinsic to the punk rock experience.
They were banned from playing Wichita. I had a ticket and the authorities stopped the show before it started.
That doesn’t surprise me at all. Where were they set to play? Do you remember the venue?
